I had oil weeping out of that area which lead me to believe it was the cylinder base gasket leaking. Turned out that the oil seal behind the waterpump was goosed & oil was issuing from the waterpump weep hole.  It really isn't difficult to remove the old oil seal with a pick tool & insert a new one. It's a false economy not to change that seal while you're in there replacing the mechanical seal anyway imo. Did the job about 10 years ago, also replaced the mechanical seal with a genuine new one. On re-commissioning the bike after a 5 year lay up this year the mechanical seal's weeping coolant now. I don't think they like sitting for long periods. This time genuine mechanical seals are unavailable, only pattern. So in we go again
